Popular diets like the lemon detox cleanse are modeled after the water fast. The lemon detox cleanse only lets you drink a mixture of lemon juice, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, several times per day for up to 7 days 5. However, there are several groups of people who should not water fast without medical supervision.

3-Day Fruit Fast

This includes people with gout, diabetes both types 1 and 2 , eating disorders, older adults, pregnant women and children 6. If you have never water fasted before, it is a good idea to spend three to four days preparing your body for being without food. The water fast lasts a total of 24 to 72 hours. You should not water fast for longer than this without medical supervision because of health risks. Some people may feel weak or dizzy during a water fast and may want to avoid operating heavy machinery and driving to avoid causing an accident 7.

Instead, break your fast with a smoothie or smaller meals. You can start introducing larger meals throughout the day as you feel more comfortable. The post-fast phase is especially important after longer fasts. This is because you may be at risk of refeeding syndrome, a potentially fatal condition where the body undergoes rapid changes in fluid and electrolytes 8. This phase normally lasts a day, but people who fast for three or more days may need up to three days before they feel comfortable eating larger meals.

Autophagy is a process where old parts of your cells are broken down and recycled 4. For example, autophagy may prevent damaged parts of your cells from accumulating, which is a risk factor for many cancers. This may help prevent cancer cells from growing Research from animal studies consistently finds that water fasting helps promote autophagy. Animal studies also show that autophagy may help extend lifespan 1 , 3 , That said, there are very few human studies on water fasting, autophagy and disease prevention.

More research is needed before recommending it to promote autophagy. Research shows that longer, medically supervised water fasts may help people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure 14 , In one study, 68 people who had borderline high blood pressure water fasted for nearly 14 days under medical supervision. Additionally, the average drop in blood pressure was 20 mmHg for systolic upper value and 7 mmHg for diastolic lower value , which is significant In another study, people with high blood pressure water fasted for an average of 10 to 11 days.

Additionally, the average fall in systolic blood pressure upper value was a substantial 37 mmHG Unfortunately, there are no human studies that investigate the link between short-term water fasts 24 to 72 hours and blood pressure. Insulin and leptin are important hormones that affect the body's metabolism. Insulin helps the body store nutrients from the bloodstream, while leptin helps the body feel full 16 , Research shows that water fasting could make your body more sensitive to leptin and insulin. Greater sensitivity makes these hormones more effective 18 , 19 , 20 , For example, being more insulin sensitive means your body is more efficient at reducing blood sugar.

Meanwhile, being more leptin sensitive could help your body process hunger signals more efficiently and, in turn, may lower your risk of obesity 22 , I think that your concern about cleansing and detoxing being a new form of fad diet depends upon the cleanse or detox philosophy. But I believe that a cleanse should be a short days kickstart — not a cureall. During a cleanse you should also be consuming adequate amounts of essential fatty acids, meaning that your body will have good fats to use for energy, and will also give your body a useful amount of calories.

Ultimately, a cleanse should not compromise the metabolism, especially as light aerobic exercise is also recommended such as walking, running, rebounding, swimming or cycling. In fact, as the maximum length of the cleanse is days I do not think that there will be significant reduction of metabolism — especially as you will actually be consuming more food than normal.

I believe that cleansing an detox are really just new forms of diets fads.

Our bodies are very capable of cleaning without having to radically change our diet. What we need to do after a period of binging is to eat healthily and sensibly and take some exercise. Reducing your metabolism is the last thing you want to do if you plan to reduce your weight. Get active and eat healthy and your body will look after itself! I agree wholeheartedly with you when you say how important it is for us not to expend energy digesting whilst we are trying to heal our bodies, and this is the premise around cleansing with only raw soups, fresh vegetable juice and water with lemon or lime squeezed in of course! By sticking with these foods and drinks VERY little energy is required for digestion, and the body can assimilate the nutrients extremely quickly with almost no energy required.

However, I am not a biology expert so I cannot predict for sure — this is just common sense for me. Feed the body with nutrient dense foods which require little to no effort to break down and you will see better results than feeding it with nothing at all. Will we not miss, while cleansing, this enormous extra energyshot?

Cleansing vs. Fasting - Live Energized

What is your opinion? Why not first cleansing and then fasting so in this way our body is fully supplied with nutrients, and we will not be short of them while fasting. Is that a solution? One of the biggest errors is beginning fasting when not enough saturated with all kinds of nutrients. But once the hangover has gone — what exactly will this detox mean for you? Wikipedia defines fasting as: Fasting is the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food and in some cases drink, for a period of time.

Cleansing, to me, has nothing to do with the above. Is it just me or does this not make a lot more sense? Cleanse and Fuel Your Body See a cleanse as a way to nourish yourself back to your best.
